What I’m looking for: beautiful, lyrical language that has wide appeal to people of all reading interests and levels. Unusual similes and metaphors (avoid clichés at all costs). Down-to-earth themes that are relatable and understandable. Words that appeal to the senses–things that can be seen, touched, tasted, heard, and smelled. Haunting images. Clever plots! Unexpected twists. Characters that stay with me long after I’ve put aside the pages. Things that connect us, as human beings, to each other. Truth. Hope. Joy. Sorrow. Mistakes. Regret. Redemption. Love.

What I’m not looking for: gratuitous foul language, graphic violence, sexual exploitations, political rants, fantasy fiction, science fiction, horror themes, hatred, racism, degrading, in any way, of any human being or group of human beings.

Simultaneous Submissions and Previously Published Work: I will gladly take simultaneous submissions as long as you indicate on your initial entry that you are submitting elsewhere AND withdraw any piece immediately if it’s accepted by another publisher. I am not taking previously published work at this time, but that may change in the future.

After publication in Soul Poetry, Prose & Arts Magazine, the exclusive copyright reverts to the author with the agreement the author will credit Soul Poetry, Prose & Arts Magazine should they choose to publish the same piece in other publications.

AI generated work: Soul Poetry, Prose & Arts Magazine does not accept any AI generated work, and any work deemed as such will be automatically rejected.

Poetry

Submit up to four poems at a time, preferably in Times New Roman or other clear, readable fonts. Poems should be left justified (as much as possible) without too many wild indentations (I can accommodate some simple indents). Keep poems to a maximum of 60 lines. Prose poetry is fine too, as well as free verse, haibun, haiku, and other traditional forms. Submit all poems in one Word document, each poem titled (except for haiku) and on its own page. (No PDFs). Unless you are writing a sonnet, each line of the poem should not begin with a capital letter unless the line starts with a proper noun. Rhyming poetry is fine, but it will need to be breathtakingly spectacular.

Fiction, Flash, & Micro

Submit up to one fiction story (maximum 2,000 words) OR up to two flash fiction stories (up to 750 words each) OR up to three micro fiction pieces (maximum 200 words each). Single-space each story with one extra space between paragraphs. If submitting multiple flash or micro stories, put them all in a Word document with each story starting on its own page.

Nonfiction & CNF

Submit up to one nonfiction or creative nonfiction pieces (maximum 2,000 words). Please designate which category your piece fits. Single space, leaving one extra space between paragraphs.

Art

Submit up to five pieces of art (photographs, drawings, paintings, etc) as jpeg images. Make sure each piece has a designated title. They can be color or black and white. I love both.

Where to Submit Response Time / Payment

Please submit all entries to soulpoetrysubs@yahoo.com

Please attach all submissions as a Word Doc. Single-space prose and leave a space between paragraphs, single-space poetry (and put each poem on a separate page). Include a short, third-person bio of no more than 100 words (2-3 lines).

Response time is typically between 3-5 days, although weekends, vacations, and holidays may add on an extra couple of days. You will most likely not wait more than a week for a response.

There is no payment at this time, although I will run a summer contest each year in which there will be a $10 payment for best art, best poetry, and best prose via PayPal or Venmo. I will also select a “Featured Artist” and “Featured Writer” each issue and nominate for the Pushcart Prize each year.

HAPPY WRITING & CREATING!
